Commentary on Rolando Prado Car Accident in Natalia

People are obviously going to be concerned anytime authorities bring up alcohol as a possible factor. That's completely understandable, but it's important to keep in mind that authorities often bring suspicions in reports only for evidence to show that other factors were involved. The same could prove true here.

Now, if alcohol was a factor, that could of course involve a local bar illegally over-serving the driver. Those negligent establishments can be liable for crashes like this under dram shop law, which only makes more thorough investigations that much more important. At the end of the day, getting people the help they deserve is important, and Texas law doesn't exclude those who may have made mistakes themselves.

So while I can't say if alcohol did or didn't contribute to this crash, I can say it's an important factor to investigate. But so are mechanical issues, medical conditions, road hazards, tire defects, missing signage or lighting, or even other vehicles that fled the scene. The moments following a crash can be chaotic, and authorities can latch onto the wrong details. If an accident like this isn't followed up on by experienced independent investigators, there's no telling if those involved here will get the answers they deserve.
