Philadelphia Man Injured in Truck Accident on I-20 in Merkel, TX

Merkel, TX -- June 3, 2022, a Philadelphia man sustained injuries due to an accident where a truck went off-road and overturned along I-20.

Investigators reported that the crash took place at around 2:13 p.m. along I-20 at the FM 126 overpass. Officials said that a 29-year-old Philadelphia man was in a Dodge Ram 3500 pulling a trailer along eastbound I-20. The truck somehow left the road and went down the embankment, causing the truck to overturn.

The truck driver had incapacitating injuries due to the crash. Reports mentioned that the truck driver told a witness on the scene that he'd been driving for too long. However, reports also say the driver told authorities he swerved to miss someone who cut him off. Right now, the cause of the crash remains unclear.

Commentary on Truck Rollover Accident on I-20 in Merkel

These differing accounts of what the truck driver said are concerning, and police essentially just say that the truck driver was probably tired and over-corrected. Maybe that's true, I certainly can't say otherwise. But there are some complex issues to consider.

Philadelphia Man Injured in Truck Accident on I-20 in Merkel, TX

First of all, let's say fatigue was the cause of the crash. That's not always so straight forward. A professional truck driver can certainly push their limits (physically and legally). Sometimes, however, it's not entirely within their control. I had a case not long involving a fatigued trucker because his employer essentially forced drivers to meet ludicrous deadlines under threat of being fired. Could it be something like that contributed to this crash?

Secondly, consider how someone may be seriously rattled after a serious crash like this. Whatever they said to someone on scene may be out of confusion or simply a small part of the much larger picture. Did authorities work to see if any other drivers were involved here, as the truck driver said? Is there any video or debris at the scene that can corroborate this story? Is there a description of the vehicle the public can keep an eye out for?

Likely or not, all possibilities should be explored after a crash like this. After all, it's best to prioritize getting help for victims and letting the evidence speak for itself.
