Commentary on Car Accident on Copia Street in El Paso

If it turned out alcohol was a factor here, it unfortunately wouldn't be surprising. 2:00 a.m. is just about the most dangerous time to be on the road precisely because a bunch of people are on their way home from bars. What makes that particularly important to consider is that a lot of those bars actually contribute to crashes like this, and they can be held liable for that.

In Texas, dram shop law says that an alcohol provider who over-serves an obviously intoxicated person can be liable for damages resulting from that intoxication. Bars illegally over-serving patrons and harming their community need to be held accountable so they clean up their act. In my experience confronting hundreds of negligent businesses over the years, no one made those mistakes twice once they saw the true costs of such reckless business. The fact it gets people some much needed help only makes it more important to consider.

So while it's unclear what exactly happened here, finding out if alcohol played a role is certainly a prudent place to start looking.
