Commentary on Car Accident on Highway 161 in Irving

I just want to be clear up front that the claims of alcohol being a factor here aren't much more than speculation right now. Without clear evidence, there are still plenty of other possible factors that warrant investigation. However, something that concerns me is that if alcohol was a factor here, the timing of the crash is rather unusual.

People don't usually wake up at 6:00 a.m., get drunk, and go for a drive. It's more common for an alcohol related crash like this to involve someone who was illegally over-served the night before. If someone drinks too much up until closing time, and they're still drunk hours later when it's time to go to work, for example, then it could be a serious sign that the establishment they were at needs to be held responsible through dram shop law for over-serving them and contributing to a serious crash.

Unfortunately, this is not the sort of thing authorities tend to look into on their own. That's why steps need to be taken to ensure the right people are looking into what exactly happened here.
