Commentary on Luis Castillo Accident in Goldthwaite
Some people have an unfortunate tendency to blame any single-vehicle accident on the driver. In comment sections fingers are often pointed at common issues like distraction from a cell phone, falling asleep at the wheel (particularly in late-night/early-morning accidents), or even in some cases impairment.
Statistically speaking those are some of the most common causes for a driver to lose control and leave the roadway, but they are far from the only explanations and none can or should be taken for granted. Further investigation might find this accident was due to something out of the victim's hands. People crash every day after their cars blow a tire, hit a wet patch of road, or are forced to swerve to avoid animals or other vehicles in their path.

As I said, currently no one can say what caused this tragic crash. I hope investigators look into it carefully--not just for signs of common factors, but also for less-common issues. It's important to be thorough and consider all the potential factors in search of the full story. Will police take the time and care to do the job right?
