That may be true sometimes, but it would surprise folks to see how many times I looked into a case where police got the facts completely wrong.
A while back, for example, a family came to me after their loved one reportedly went left of center and hit an 18-wheeler. As we dug into things, though, the evidence told a much more complex story. What actually happened was the 18-wheeler crossed the center line first, then the victim swerved left to avoid it. That's when the 18-wheeler veered back into its original lane, and the vehicles collided head-on. The investigating officer simply didn't have the tools or experience to catch those details, so they just went with where the vehicles ultimately ended up.
