Commentary on Grace Rodriguez Truck Accident in Chappell Hill
When folks read about a crash like this, they just assume the truck driver was being a reckless idiot and caused a crash. That's entirely possible--in fact it's common. But folks should keep in mind that there are some unavoidable circumstances, whether or not they're likely, and there are even situations where someone's mistake is just a sign of much bigger problems.

Here's an example of what I mean by that. I had this case a while back where a truck driver fell asleep at the wheel after driving for over 20 straight hours. That's well above the legal maximum, so what in the world was the driver thinking? We looked to answer that question, and that's when the more serious issue came to light.
That driver's employer would routinely set ludicrous deadlines for truck drivers to meet. If they failed to, then they risked losing their jobs. In order to appease their bosses and put food on their family's table, the drivers at this company were essentially forced to drive recklessly. It was just a matter of time before someone got hurt.
I'm not saying anything like that happened here, of course. But if steps aren't taken to ensure investigators can look into these unusual circumstances, then the reports victims and families get from authorities may not be as thorough as they need to be. Are steps being taken here, then, to ensure that those involved here are getting all the facts?
