Commentary on Angelina Alcantar Accident on East Fwy in Houston
Police say the young driver was intoxicated. If evidence confirms that was why she crashed into the truck, she may face some legal consequences. That's not really for me to talk about, as it's between her and the courts. However, she may not be the only party to hold accountable.
Texas dram shop law says alcohol providers who over-serve an obviously intoxicated person may be liable for damages she causes or suffers while under the influence. This helps injured victims get back on their feet after a crash as well as ensuring bars and stores learn a lesson for their reckless over-service. Not every DWI accident involves a dram violation and most businesses follow the rules, but the ones who don't should be held accountable for what happens when they send an over-intoxicated customer out the door--particularly if they served alcohol to an underage person.

With that said, alcohol is only a theory at this point. As they wait to see what the blood tests say police shouldn't neglect other possible explanations. The driver could simply have lost control on a wet roadway or the vehicle could have had a mechanical or tire failure, just to name a few. There are plenty of reasons a crash like this could happen besides alcohol, and they all deserve careful consideration. The most important thing is to learn the whole story; any action beyond that would depend on what the story turns out to be.
