Commentary on Dump Truck Accident on Route 23 in Ashland
To be rather blunt here, a crash like this is often foreseeable and avoidable. The most common reasons a truck's brakes fail in a hilly area is due to misuse or disrepair. If a truck driver isn't managing their brakes well or if they are overloaded, the brakes can overheat, causing them to fail catastrophically. Alternatively, some companies force employees to operate dangerous vehicles that are in dire need of maintenance. If that leads to a serious mechanical failure, those companies can be on the hook for their mistakes.

While far less likely, however, it's still very important to ensure manufacturing defects also get attention. While not that common, a mistake from a manufacturer can certainly lead to catastrophic failure a driver or their employer couldn't possibly foresee. That sort of thing isn't what police tend to look into, though, so there may need to be more thorough independent investigations to really find out what happened here.
