Commentary on Marlon Fernandez Sifontes Car Accident in Leander

I'm certainly not here to speculate about the allegations made against the accused driver here. However, if it's true they were fleeing police, then drugs and alcohol aren't too uncommon reasons someone might try to evade authorities. For that reason, it's important folks understand why that can make things complex for the victims and families involved.

Put simply, if alcohol contributes to a crash, it can bring up dram shop law. The law basically says that an alcohol provider who over-serves an obviously intoxicated person can be liable for damages resulting from that intoxication. Whether that's a bar, liquor store, gas station, or restaurant, breaking the law and harming others warrants consequences, just as it does for drunk drivers. The fact dram shop can get people some much needed help only makes it more important to look into.

Like I said, though, that's just one possibility. It's one of several things that likely need more thorough independent investigations before people start jumping to conclusions. Whether or not the proper steps are being taken to look into all of this remains to be seen.
