Lufkin, TX — May 28, 2022, a 25-year-old man was seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident on First Street in Lufkin.

According to reports the incident happened around 4:35 a.m. on North First Street near Hoskins Avenue. Preliminary investigation suggests the victim was driving a Hyundai Elantra north on the roadway when he lost control and hit a power pole.

The driver suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to an area hospital. Investigators suspected he was distracted at the time of the wreck, but also noted alcohol may have been a factor.

Commentary on Car Accident on First Street in Lufkin

Police think driver distraction is a factor in this crash, but also noted that alcohol consumption may have been involved. Some readers may have decided the same thing given the time of the crash, but as always it's best not to jump to conclusions.

At this point no one can say for certain what specifically caused the wreck or the victim's injuries; for all anyone knows it could have been something far more unusual than distraction or drinking. Mechanical problems in the vehicle, loose gravel or water on the road, wildlife running into the truck's path, or even some kind of incapacitating health problem could all have contributed, and that's just a few possibilities out of dozens.

I'm not trying to overcomplicate things here. Further investigation could show police were correct about distraction, or even perhaps alcohol. If that second suspicion turns out to be right (meaning it's proven by clear evidence), that could add further wrinkles to the investigation since police should find out whether a local business violated dram shop law and might then be legally responsible for the driver's injuries.

In the meantime I hope they don't focus so much on those theories that they neglect to perform a thorough investigation to learn the whole story. The victim deserves the benefit of the doubt unless objective evidence says otherwise.
