San Antonio, TX -- May 28, 2022, a 32-year-old passenger was seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident on Wurzbach Parkway in San Antonio.

According to reports the incident happened around 2:15 a.m. on Wurzbach near Weidner Road. Preliminary investigation suggests a Mazda 3 was headed east on the roadway when the driver lost control. The car veered onto a sidewalk and sideswiped the median wall. It traveled a short distance further on the sidewalk and then swerved back onto the road where it came to rest.

Police arriving at the scene found the car's seriously-injured passenger slumped over in the vehicle, but the driver reportedly fled the scene before responders got there. The passenger was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Commentary on Car Accident on Wurzbach Pkwy in San Antonio

Reports say the driver fled the scene before police got there, but I can't help but notice in the process they left behind someone who can almost certainly identify them as well as the vehicle they were driving. It's not guaranteed that either of those will lead police to a suspect, but it's a far better place to start than with nothing.

Once the suspect is identified and found, hopefully authorities can get some answers from them about why they fled the scene. Did they just panic? Did they have something to hide, like drugs or active warrants? Were they drunk? If that last one was the case, that could mean a local alcohol provider is liable for the victim's injuries under dram shop law. It's in everyone's best interests to find out if a law-breaking bar was involved here, both to get help for the injured woman and to stop that business from further endangering its community.

Before anything like that can be considered the runaway driver must be found. The best way to make that happen is to keep these reports in the public eye. Likewise, members of the community should come forward with any helpful information. It may take a little time, but I remain hopeful someone will do what's right. After the driver is caught and the details of this incident are clarified somewhat, further action beyond that--if any--can be determined.
