Commentary on Multi-Vehicle Accident on Beltline Rd in Decatur

There isn't a lot of information yet about how this tragic crash began or what happened in it. Since there's so much context missing from reports, I hope no one tries to fill in the blanks for themselves as the investigation continues.

To learn more about the wreck police still need to answer a great many questions. There are still basic details to clarify like exactly how many vehicles were involved and what time of day the wreck happened, but then come the more detail-oriented issues. Were any of the drivers acting unsafely--speeding, looking at phones, falling asleep? Were any of their vehicles in a state of bad repair? What were road and weather conditions like at the time? Were lights necessary, and if so were all the vehicles' lights on? That's just a handful of the many wrinkles that must still be ironed out. Little as I like saying it, I'm not sure police investigators will devote the time and attention needed to get all the answers.

After a major accident--particularly one involving a commercial truck--I generally suggest an independent investigation to better ensure the whole truth is found. Whatever is learned, those affected deserve to know that every effort was made to bring them the whole truth. Anything beyond that would depend on what the truth turns out to be.
