Commentary on Dump Truck Accident on US 59 in Jackson County
Folks often wonder what the point of talking about crashes like this is. Police say the driver admitted to messing up, so what else is there to discuss? Well, something that comes with 30 years of truck wreck experience is knowing that isn't always as simple as just blaming one driver or the other. There could be other extenuating circumstances to consider.

Take for example a case a colleague of mine and I were discussing. In that crash, a woman was texting and driving before hitting the back of a semi. What stood out was that she was able to hit the brakes and slow down significantly before hitting the truck, but she still had incredibly serious injuries despite wearing her seatbelt. Was she just unlucky? Well, in a way, yes. That's because more thorough investigations found that she had a defective airbag and likely would have been fine otherwise.
When getting people the help they need, it's important to find out what caused their injuries. That's often the same thing that caused the crash, but not always. Maybe this crash is more simple than that, but it's worth keeping in mind that things are rarely as straight-forward as they may seem, which is why it's almost always best to have independent investigators look into crashes like this.
