Commentary on Renanta Russo Truck Accident in Santa Cruz County
There isn't much information about what exactly happened here, but a truck reportedly hitting someone from behind while they're trying to make a left turn doesn't exactly paint the truck driver in the best light. I certainly wouldn't rule out any unusual possible factors that may have been beyond the truck driver's control, but it's also likely that thorough investigations will show just how avoidable this crash was.
I recall a case not long ago, for example, where a semi-truck hit someone as they waited to make a left turn. The trucking company claimed that the victim simply slammed on their brakes without a blinker, making them unavoidable. When we dug into things, though, that didn't hold up.
Nearby security footage from a store clearly showed that our client came to a controlled stop with their blinker on, then waited for about 6 or 7 seconds. Any approaching vehicle would have had plenty of time to slow down, but the truck driver simply wasn't paying attention, crashing into the stopped car. It was only after bringing that evidence to light that the trucking company began to cooperate.
Now, I'm not saying that happened here. But folks often take for granted that police will look into things, and they'll get the answers they need. In reality, it often takes more thorough independent investigations to bring the full story to light. Perhaps the same will prove true here.
