Commentary on Truck Accident on I-64 in York County
A truck suddenly veering off the road, as reports seem to say happened here, is more than a little concerning. It's easy enough for folks to just assume the truck driver was doing something reckless, and frankly that's the most likely explanation. But not only could there be something unusual here, like a sudden tire blowout or a medical emergency, but even common factors can happen for complex reasons the authorities alone can rarely address properly.

For example, I handled a situation not long ago where a truck driver crashed after falling asleep at the wheel. Pretty open-and-shut, right? Well, our more thorough investigations found that he was trying to meet a ludicrous deadline set by his employer. This company would routinely demand drivers meet unreasonable expectations, risking their livelihoods if they failed to do so. It was just a matter of time before someone got themselves or someone else seriously hurt, and that's exactly what happened.
To be clear, I'm not trying to say that happened here. But had there only been a typical crash report into that situation, it likely would have just seemed like some reckless trucker who didn't care about the safety of others. The reality was that there was a whole company putting its workers and the public at serious risk that needed to clean up its act. That's why thorough investigations from experienced professionals is almost always a crucial step forward after a commercial truck wreck. It's not about reaching a resolution as quickly as possible; it's about achieving the correct resolution through diligent and thorough work. Are those steps being taken here?
