Commentary on Katina Carter, Charles Dennie Crash on IL-99

Early reports make the cause of this crash sound pretty straightforward, as they say the truck driver fell asleep. However, time and time again on this blog I stress the importance of finding out not just what caused a crash but exactly why it happened. Let me give an example of what I mean.

Not long ago I handled a similar situation in which a trucker fell asleep at the wheel. Some didn't think there was much else to know after that, but we investigated more closely and found he'd been chugging along for more than 20 straight hours without resting.

Any trained professional driver knows that's both dangerous and illegal, so why'd he do that? Well, it turned out the company he worked for coerced drivers to meet unreasonable deadlines, essentially threatening to terminate them if they didn't live up to those ludicrous expectations. It was really just a matter of time before someone got hurt.

While an inexperienced attorney and the general public may have been ready to blame the driver and be done with it, more careful consideration revealed a pervasive issue in his workplace that desperately needed addressing. We found what we needed to ensure his company changed its ways and made amends to the people hurt by its reckless practices.

When folks call the firm the main priority is getting them answers and the help they need. As more information comes to light, in many cases they also want to see someone held accountable for the damage done. Will the necessary work and care be put in here to ensure that happens for the victims?
