Commentary on Santiago McCrea Garbage Truck Accident in Sacramento

It's not entirely clear what led to this tragic event, but I often find people are more likely to assume that someone on a bicycle did something wrong. It's common to encounter the sentiment that cyclists just think they own the road and can do whatever they want. Those riders certainly exist, but it would be ridiculous to suggest drivers are always keeping a proper lookout for the smaller vehicles.

Likely or not, simply determining who had the right-of-way is not likely to tell the whole story. How visible was the victim? Where were they in relation to lanes of travel? Did they have lights and reflectors? Were other drivers easily able to avoid the victim? Was the truck driver on their phone or otherwise being inattentive? Did the cyclist suddenly cross an intersection as the truck driver made a turn?

At the end of the day, thorough investigations need to give a victim's loved ones all the facts. Whether that leads to someone needing to be held accountable or simply closure, the evidence needs to speak for itself if folks are going to get the resolution they deserve. It remains to be seen if anyone is taking those steps here.
