Commentary on Truck Accident on Irving Boulevard in Dallas

Folks tend to read reports like this and assume these situations are all open-and-shut. Police say a driver messed up, so that driver is accountable, right? Well, things are rarely that simple. Not only do investigators need to anticipate other explanations to rule them out or potentially confirm them, but even if a common mistake led to the crash, uncommon factors can lead to those mistakes.

Here's what I mean by that. A while back, we had this case where a reckless driver caused a crash. As we dug into his history, we were surprised to find that he barely had any experience at all. In fact, records showed his employer rushed through safety training specifically to get him on the road as soon as possible. Any responsible trucker can attest to the skill and car it takes to safely operate a commercial truck. That company should have known their actions would get someone hurt; maybe they did know and made those reckless decisions anyway.

I'm not saying anything like that happened here, but that's what independent investigations are for. They can definitively show that an obvious explanation is the correct one, they can show that other explanations are wrong, or they can bring to light situations that authorities overlooked. Whatever the case, getting folks the help they need means ensuring they have the tools and allies to get all the facts. Were those steps ever taken here?
