Bobby Herrera Killed in Car Accident at 15th and Grape in Abilene, TX

Abilene, TX -- May 26, 2022, 36-year-old Bobby Herrera was killed in a car accident at North 15th and Grape streets in Abilene.

Authorities say the incident happened around 5:30 a.m. at 15th and Grape. Preliminary investigation suggests a Ford Escape was headed north on Grape when it crashed into the driver's side of a westbound Pontiac Grand Prix on 15th. After the impact the Pontiac ran off the road and came to rest in a nearby front yard.

Herrera, driving the Pontiac, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 30-year-old passenger in the car and the Ford driver received non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation continues. No further information is currently available.

Images of the intersection where the crash happened suggest traffic on 15th Street has a stop sign and is meant to yield to thru-traffic on Grape. Based on the limited information in reports that makes it sound like the victim may not have appropriately yielded to the approaching Ford. However, I'm not trying to speculate or point fingers here; a man lost his life in this crash and careful investigation must be conducted to find out why.

There are still a lot of lingering questions about the wreck whose answers might help us understand it. How fast were both vehicles traveling? Did the Pontiac stop for the sign at Grape before proceeding forward? Were both vehicles' lights on? Is the area lit by streetlights at night? Were both drivers awake, alert, and paying attention to their surroundings? Is it possible either party was impaired?

That's just a handful of the many issues that still must be addressed before anyone could really say what happened. I'm not trying to make the situation more complicated or point fingers; it's just important that all the bases be covered in pursuit of the truth. That's the least the victims and the loved ones of the man who died deserve. If there are further steps beyond just bringing them the full story, that would depend on what the story turns out to be.
