Commentary on 18-wheeler Accident on Fm 2854 in Montgomery
With collisions like this, folks have a tendency to assume everything will be simple and straight-forward. In reality, things are rarely ever that simple. Thorough investigations are not always important because a crash must have involved complex factors. Maybe this all is as simple as someone looking at their phone to change their music. However, investigations must be thorough to find out for certain whether or not something more complex did happen and to ensure that evidence doesn't slip through the cracks.
For example, I handled a situation not long ago where a driver texting while driving caused a serious crash. Pretty open-and-shut, right? Well, we kept investigating just to be sure, and we found out that the driver was responding to his supervisor. This supervisor required drivers to respond immediately without any excuses, and he harangued drivers constantly throughout the day. It was inevitable that this reckless behavior would lead to someone getting hurt.
So what folks would see as some slam dunk case ended up being a complex process of getting a whole company to clean up its act. Maybe nothing like that happened here, but steps taken after a serious truck wreck are to ensure victims and families have as much evidence as possible telling their side of the story. Were those steps taken here?
