Commentary on Dual Truck Accident on Highway 58 in Tehachapi
It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people saw that a truck reportedly hit another truck that was parked on the shoulder, and they just assume the moving truck is completely to blame for this. Quite frankly, that's the most likely explanation. After all, there aren't many situations where someone hits a parked truck on the shoulder during daylight hours without doing something wrong. But there could be extenuating circumstances to consider which police may not be giving enough attention to.
For example, why was the parked truck on the shoulder? That's generally a place meant for emergencies, yet many truck drivers will stop for all kinds of avoidable, unnecessary reasons. Eating, checking their phone, sleeping, securing cargo that should have already been secured, maintenance issues they or their employer had ample opportunity to address--these are all common factors that can create a deadly hazard which are completely avoidable. Could it be something like that happened here?
Again, I can't say one way or another what happened here. I only bring up these alternative possible explanations to remind people that truck wrecks are rarely as black and white as they may think. It takes thorough investigations to ensure all the facts are clear, and that's how folks are most likely to get the help they deserve. It remains to be seen if those steps are being taken here.
