Commentary on Traffic Accident on I-270 in Columbus
Right now there's very little information about what happened out there on the interstate, so while police are putting the pieces together I hope nobody decides for themselves what occurred. I know how frustrating it can be to want answers that simply aren't there to give yet, but making assumptions generally does more harm than good in these situations.
Investigators still have a lot of details to consider while figuring out not only what happened, but who (if anyone) is responsible. Hopefully they'll look into many possible factors: Driver mistakes like distraction or speeding, mechanical issues with the vehicles, road conditions and design, visibility, lighting and sightlines, inclement weather, other traffic in the area, and many other elements that could have influenced the crash. Considering all the variables is an important part of any investigation.
As more dots get connected, presuming anything isn't wise. I've seen too many folks rush to judgment after reading just a few sentences in the news, only to completely change their tune after more information came to light. The same could happen here, though a "by the book" police investigation may not fully explain things either.
After a major accident--particularly one involving a commercial truck--I generally suggest an independent investigation to better ensure the whole truth is found. Whatever is learned, those affected deserve every available answer. Any other actions beyond simply learning the truth would depend on what that truth turns out to be.
