One Injured in Box Truck Crash off I-45 in Montgomery County, TX

Montgomery County, TX -- May 25, 2022, one person was critically injured when a box truck crashed into a ravine off Interstate 45 in Montgomery County.

Authorities say the incident happened Wednesday morning along northbound I-45 near Calvary Road. Preliminary investigation suggests only that a box truck had run off the road while allegedly trying to avoid another vehicle. It ran down an embankment, then crashed into the ravine at the bottom. The truck sustained disabling damage and one person inside was pinned in critical condition.

The injured person was extricated and transported to an area hospital.

Commentary on Truck Accident on I-45 in Montgomery County

Right now reports seem to have only a loose grip on exactly what happened here. It's one thing to know that a truck went off-course and crashed, but it's another entirely to get to the bottom of how that happened. Reports suggest the driver went off-course while trying to avoid another vehicle, but have police considered other alternatives to be sure the truth is found? Could the driver have been distracted by something--a phone, radio, or cooler for example? Did they fall asleep? Could they have had some kind of incapacitating medical issue? If so, what kind? Was the truck itself in good working order? What were weather, road, and traffic conditions like in the area at the time?

I don't ask questions like that to get lost in the weeds or point any fingers--nor am I questioning the official narrative in the early reports. Unfortunately many drivers see no issue with darting into the path of a commercial truck, which can cause serious hazards. In looking at other possibilities I'm just addressing the need to consider all the possible variables and investigate them carefully.

Some may not think that's not particularly necessary because "workers' comp will handle it." It's possible that would be the sole form of remedy available for the injured person, but it's important to be sure. If the truck overturned and crashed because something in or on it broke due to neglected maintenance, for example, someone should be held accountable for sending the driver out in a questionable vehicle. Likewise, if the driver didn't receive adequate training in how to respond to being cut off then the company who put them at the wheel may have some answering to do for its practices.

Victims and families that seek justice have sometimes learned the hard way that no matter how clear things seem at first, it usually takes more than police or news reports to secure the help they need. That's why I often suggest the help of independent investigators with the time, tools, and training to look much closer than law enforcement typically does. With the evidence they find, victims and families whose lives are forever changed by these accidents are able to get back on their feet.
