Commentary on Tractor-Trailer Accident on Joe Battle in El Paso
With situations like this, it can be a little too easy for people to jump to conclusions. They think the reports seem clear, so holding people accountable and getting the victims some help will be no problem. In reality, any crash, no matter how seemingly straight-forward, needs to be taken seriously. It's possible there is more to the situation than reports let on.
These reports talk about a truck driver making a maneuver that shouldn't really cause problems. The fact it did either means something highly unusual occurred, or the truck driver failed to do something any halfway trained trucker could. Why is that, and why can't folks just wait for police to finish their reports?
I'll give an example of how this becomes challenging rather quickly. A recent case that came to me involving a truck driver seemed pretty open-and-shut. As we dug deeper, though, it turned out this truck driver was barely even a truck driver. His employer barely trained him at all, giving him the keys despite knowing that he hadn't properly demonstrated that he could safely operate a massive commercial truck. A company engaging in that behavior is a lot more serious than just some driver making a mistake due to a lapse in judgment. If they weren't held accountable, they could simply continue putting lives at risk.
Again, maybe nothing so complex happened here, but that's difficult to say without more thorough independent investigations. If authorities overlooked something important, bring it to light could make a world of difference in getting folks the help they need.
