Commentary on 18-wheeler Accident on I-294 in Glenview
It's not unusual for there to be so few details surrounding a serious commercial truck wreck this soon after it happens. The key, however, is ensuring the right people are looking into things as soon as possible. Waiting around for police reports is not always as helpful as folks may think. These crashes can be incredibly complex, and authorities don't always have the tools or experience to ensure all the facts are clear. That's when mistakes happen, and that can only serve to further harm victims and families.
Not long ago, for example, a family came to me about crash where they waited for months for the reports only to remain empty-handed. We found out that the investigating officer was waiting around for the trucking company to share data from the truck's engine control module, which they allowed a company representative to take from the scene. Considering the ECM can show vital information like speeds and even braking leading up to the crash, it was downright irresponsible to let the company just take it from the scene without independently verifying the information.
We ultimately salvaged that case through some diligent legal maneuvering, but one mistake nearly cost a family dearly. Mistakes like that happen all the time, and families unprepared to avoid or correct those mistakes can easily find themselves fighting an uphill battle just to get the answers they deserve. Maybe authorities here are more experienced and better equipped, but waiting around to find out until it's too late isn't a good approach for victims and families that deserve as much help as they can get.
