Commentary on Go-Kart Accident on FM 436 in Little River-Academy

Clearly this is an unfortunate accident and it's always troubling to read about young people being hurt. There's still plenty more investigating to do in order to find out exactly what happened and why, though I have a feeling some people were all set to write this matter off as kids being reckless somewhere they shouldn't.

People have an unfortunate tendency to seize on certain details and use them as reasons to dismiss the need for a closer look. Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and juveniles operating anything with wheels all get some of that attitude, which can make learning the truth about what hurt them much harder. It's always far better to investigate their accidents carefully and learn exactly what happened, all in the name of both finding the truth and ensuring the victims get all the help they deserve with their recovery.

Among those facts would be elements like where exactly the go-kart and the truck were in the road, how fast each was moving, if both were in good working order, if their operators were paying attention, road and weather conditions, and many other details (including whether a 5-year-old could properly operate the kart at speed).

Some of that's just to make sure the whole story is found, but there are certain extra concerns about whether the truck driver acted as a reasonably prudent professional would have in the same circumstances. Seeing a couple of kids tooling around in a go-kart near one's big rig should be a cause for extra care, and while I'm not saying the trucker acted any way other than perfectly I think it would be best to prove that rather than assume it.

If nothing else, I think a few sentences and even fewer details in an early news report don't really get to the heart of this matter. Hopefully there are more thorough investigations to ensure the kids' family gets answers.
