Commentary on Juan Carlos Soto Single-Vehicle Accident in Pittsburg

When people read about crashes like this, they tend to assume that the driver messed up. Just after midnight, a car losing control suddenly is often a sign someone was fatigued, distracted, or drunk. I certainly wouldn't suggest ignoring those possibilities--especially considering the possibility a local bar over-served the driver and is therefore liable under dram shop law for contributing to their injuries. But jumping to conclusions isn't going to get anyone the answers they need.

As unlikely as other factors may be, prudent investigators know to ensure nothing slips through the cracks. Were there mechanical issues? Tire defects? Road hazards? Poor signage or lighting? Another driver that left the scene? At the end of the day, the evidence should be allowed to speak for itself. Whether or not authorities allowed the evidence to do so here remains to be seen.
