Commentary on School Bus Accident on Route 22 in Maineville
It seems from reports like the box truck driver made an unsafe traffic maneuver in an effort to avoid a previous crash. Obviously if the only alternative had been to plow into the crash site then steering away seems like a prudent move, but depending on some other factors it seems like stopping and waiting to ensure the opposite lane was clear would have been far more prudent a choice. As things stand the truck driver apparently sideswiped a school bus with two dozen children aboard rather than stop and take a beat to figure out what to do next. He's lucky things didn't end up worse. With that said, though, I always feel some caution when I see reports about injured kids--even if those reports downplay the damage.
Even if children seem only to have minor injuries, it's always important to treat an accident as though they were serious. People don't always consider that injuries can affect children differently. An injury that adults shrug off and heal from quickly can cause long-term issues for kids whose bodies are still growing and changing. If parents don't realize there is a problem until further down the line, it may be too late by then to get evidence about the crash to get the assistance their child needs. Taking the necessary steps right away helps ensure that the families are prepared to help their kid while hoping that it won't ultimately be necessary--a simple "better safe than sorry" approach. This accident like most involving commercial trucks is unlikely to be the exception.
