Commentary on Hunter Earl Hoover Tractor-Trailer Accident in San Antonio
Obviously this driver's attempt to slow down was unsuccessful, and it's easy to assume that was all due to something like speeding or distracted driving. Those are certainly common factors, but it's important investigators also look into less common possible factors. Something like sudden mechanical issues, for example, are pretty rare, but they do happen. Some seemingly unpredictable factors can turn out to be avoidable once there are more thorough investigations.
Case in point, a family came to us a while back with a crash in which a truck driver had a sudden medical emergency. As unavoidable as that seemed, though, further investigations showed the driver had a long history of medical problems. The history was such that putting him behind the wheel of a commercial truck was outright dangerous. Still, that driver's employer continued to let him drive, putting him and others in serious danger.
Those are the kinds of things that authorities frankly don't look into all that often. That's why it's so important that crashes like this get attention from experienced independent investigator so folks at least know they're getting the full story.
