Commentary on Shakyla Monice Johnson 18-wheeler Accident in Houston

If what these reports say is true, then it seems like this should have all been pretty avoidable. A truck driver is held to a pretty high standard in our legal system, so simply turning out of a driveway without hitting someone shouldn't be too difficult. Perhaps there are extenuating circumstances that the authorities didn't mention, but if it turned out to be something more common, such as distracted driving, that wouldn't be too surprising. Either way, making sure people have all the facts is crucial for ensuring they get the help they deserve.

An example of this would be something I handled not long ago in which a truck driver on their phone caused a serious wreck. What our investigations ultimately uncovered, however, was that the driver was on the phone with his supervisor. That supervisor constantly called and texted drivers all day, and if they didn't respond right away, they'd get in trouble. Naturally, this led to drivers taking risks on the road rather than risking their jobs. It was inevitable that someone would get hurt.

Now, did something like that happen here? There's no way I could say without more thorough investigations. My point is simply that even seemingly straight-forward situations can prove incredibly challenging. That's why a serious truck wreck is almost always best off in the hands of professionals who have experience with commercial vehicle accidents. That can be the difference between victims and families getting all the answers they deserve and a trucking company avoiding full responsibility for the actions of their driver.
