Commentary on Donald Lavern Beith U-Haul Truck Accident in Bakersfield
Despite the nearly two weeks since this crash, I haven't seen much clearer information about what happened. That makes me wonder whether or not the incident is truly getting the attention it deserves. Folks tend to see rear-end collisions, and they just assume that the rear driver did something wrong. Even authorities can fall to this bias. Is that likely? Sure, considering things like speeding, distracted driving, and following too closely are all quite common. But further investigations could show there's more complex factors surrounding the crash.
Not long ago, for example, we looked into a crash with similar reports. It turned out that the truck that the victim hit had been stopped in the middle of the road due to mechanical issues without any cones, flares, or markers to warn motorists. On top of that, the mechanical issues were the result of months upon months of neglected maintenance that the company easily could have kept up with. And to make matters worse, the mechanical issue was such that the truck driver should have been able to safely pull off the highway. Instead, he panicked and created a deadly obstacle.
I'm not saying anything like that happened here, but it's something I caution folks about all the time. A seemingly straight-forward crash can sometimes involve incredibly complex, unusual factors. That's why it's important to make sure people are getting all the facts. In few situations is that more true than for a family who lost a loved one.
