Brian Jones Dies in 18-Wheeler Overturn Accident on I-64 in Wayne County, IL

Wayne County, IL -- May 16, 2022, 41-year-old Brian Jones died after his tractor-trailer crashed and overturned on Interstate 64 in Wayne County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 5:15 p.m. on westbound I-64 near mile marker 103, close to Wayne City. Preliminary investigation suggests Jones was driving an 18-wheeler west in a construction zone when he lost control for unknown reasons. The truck hit a bridge's concrete barrier multiple times then left the roadway to the right. It hit a tree and overturned on the roadside.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Brian Jones Accident on I-64 in Wayne County

Right now reports seem to have only a loose grip on exactly what happened here. It's one thing to know that a truck went off-course and crashed, but it's another entirely to get to the bottom of how that happened. If the driver lost control, why? Was he distracted by something--a phone, radio, or cooler for example? Did he fall asleep? Could he have had some kind of incapacitating medical issue at the wheel? If so, what kind? Was the truck itself in good working order? What were weather, road, and traffic conditions like in the area at the time? Did the nearby construction play any part in the truck going out of control?

I don't ask questions like that to get lost in the weeds or point any fingers. It's just important to recognize all the possible variables and investigate them carefully--mostly to be sure all the crash's details are known, but also because every available fact is needed to get the victim's family the help they deserve.

Some may not think there's much to say about liability because "workers' comp will handle it." It's possible that would be the sole form of remedy available, but it's important to be sure. For instance, if the truck overturned and crashed because something in or on it broke due to neglected maintenance, someone should be held accountable for sending the driver out in a questionable vehicle. Moreover, if the construction zone left debris in the road or posed other hazards to drivers then the company behind that crew may have some answering to do for the dangers it created.

Victims and families that seek justice have sometimes learned the hard way that no matter how clear things seem at first, it usually takes more than police or news reports to secure the help they need. That's why I often suggest the help of independent investigators with the time, tools, and training to look much closer than law enforcement typically does. With the evidence they find, victims and families whose lives are forever changed by these accidents are able to get back on their feet.
