Authorities are still trying to work out exactly what happened here, but making sure the injured people get the help they deserve will take a careful and thorough investigation to round up all the needed facts. That tends to be true in any crash, but it's especially true for cases in Maryland and a handful of other states because of how their laws work.

The Old Line State is one of just four that use an outdated and unfair system of liability called pure contributory negligence. In a nutshell, this system says that an injured victim found at all responsible for their injuries has no case — even if they're just 1% at fault. That means if the trucking company can convince a jury the car's driver did anything unusual or risky at the wheel, the case is thrown out. Obviously a system like that is tough on victims, so to successfully pursue a claim they need an airtight case with plenty of clear evidence.

If there's any doubt or confusion about what happened in a crash (and there often is) I generally recommend working with an experienced accident reconstruction expert. This helps ensure that less-obvious details are found and the whole story is uncovered. Victims and their loved ones deserve to know that every effort was made to learn the truth--primarily for closure, but also so those responsible can be held accountable.
