Commentary on Celina Coria Pedestrian Accident in El Paso

It's tragic to see any incident like this, and obviously getting clear answers for the family should be a priority. Folks may be quick to jump to conclusions, though. The initial reports describe a pedestrian running back into the road, and that can certainly be dangerous. But it's crucial to reconstruct the conditions surrounding a deadly collision like this. Just because a pedestrian may have been in a dangerous place doesn't automatically make them responsible for an accident.

The reason for this is that drivers have a basic responsibility to avoid accidents which are reasonably avoidable. In a situation where someone runs into the road when visibility is poor, a driver may simply have no way of knowing there's someone up ahead until it's too late. Evidence could show that happened here. However, sometimes the evidence shows that someone would have been clearly visible and far away enough to avoid. That could mean, then, that a driver hitting that person did so because they were engaging in negligent behavior, such as speeding or texting and driving.

I certainly can't say one way or the other how all of that would play out here. My point is simply to discourage anyone who may be jumping to conclusions here. Someone lost their life here. Shouldn't that warrant every possible step to get their loved ones some answers?
