Commentary on Roberto Vasquez, Rafael Garza, Noah Salcido Accident in Midland County
So far it doesn't seem like police can say why this terrible event occurred. It might be something as simple as a costly moment of carelessness, but because there's a chance that something else was involved it's best that a careful investigation be conducted and the real truth is found. Was the car's driver distracted by something when he allegedly ran the stop sign? Did the car have mechanical or brake problems that kept it from stopping there? Is signage clearly visible at the intersection? Did anything block the driver's sightlines and keep him from seeing the approaching pickup? Is it possible the driver's judgment was compromised somehow, like being under the influence of alcohol?
I'm not saying I know any of the above factors were involved, but at the same time I think most would agree it'd be best to know the specific reason for a tragic loss of three lives. Those questions and many others need answers in pursuit of the truth, but I can't help but wonder if police will be as thorough as is needed to uncover the whole story. If there's any doubt about the breadth of their investigation or their dedication to getting to the bottom of things, the victims' loved ones may want to consider investigations of their own with the help of independent experts. Above all it's best if they're provided as many answers as possible. If there are other steps to take that would depend largely on what those answers turn out to be.
