Commentary on Dump Truck Accident on Highway 50 in Moniteau County

There is very little information about what went wrong here, and I'm sure some will at least be prudent enough to wait for the authorities to look into things. But when two of the victims aren't around to tell their side of the story, it becomes even more crucial to ensure there is clear evidence telling it for them. With something as complex as a head-on commercial truck wreck, anything less than proper independent accident reconstructionists can result in important details slipping through the cracks.

Not long ago, for example, I handled a crossover wreck where, according to the official reports, a car crossed the center line and hit an 18-wheeler head-on. The family just wanted to be sure they had all the facts, but it turned out the facts they had weren't even correct.

What actually happened was the 18-wheeler began drifting over the center line, so the victim swerved left to avoid it. The 18-wheeler then veered back into its original lane where the vehicles collided. The investigating officer had little experience and tools to work with, so they simply went with the truck driver's statement and the final position of the vehicles. Had there not been proper accident reconstructions, there's no telling if that victim's loved ones ever would have learned the truth.

To be clear, I'm not trying to speculate about what happened here. My point is simply that folks waiting around for answers may never get them. Taking steps early to have professionals look into things can help ensure nothing important goes overlooked. Whether this was all just a tragic accident or a series of avoidable events someone needs to be held accountable for, the first step should simply be to bring the truth to light.
