Commentary on Baytown Man Car Accident on US 183 in Briggs
It's important folks understand exactly what these early reports are and what they are not. Generally speaking, they are the best summary an officer can give following initial investigations of a crash. They are not 100%, infallible sources of information.
For instances, when people see police bring up alcohol containers, they immediately think drunk driving. But a vehicle smelling of and containing alcohol could be as much some reckless drunk driver as someone on the way home from buying alcohol crashing, causing the alcohol containers to break. That's why it's so crucial to take initial reports like this with a grain of salt and to make sure other possible factors get attention. Even unlikely possibilities, like mechanical defects, warrant attention when it comes to getting people the help they need.
Now, alcohol needs to be included in that, of course. That's especially true if a local establishment is liable for illegally over-serving the driver. But making sure authorities aren't missing the forest for the trees is often a prudent step following a serious wreck like this.
