Commentary on Jimmy Lopez, Valce Parks, Jawanna Washington Wrong-way Driver Accident in Lubbock

Any crash involving a wrong-way driver is going to raise some serious red flags. Especially just after midnight, it's all too common for alcohol to lead to a crash like this. One of the reasons this is so important to consider is because the level of intoxication wrong-way drivers are usually at is far beyond just the legal limit. To be clear, I don't bring this up to speak ill of anyone. In fact, it's possible there's an outside party here whose recklessness got a man killed and a family seriously hurt: a local bar.

In Texas, dram shop law says that an alcohol provider who over-serves an obviously intoxicated person can be liable for damages resulting from that intoxication. When someone gets onto the wrong side of the freeway, investigations often show that a local business recklessly continued serving that person well beyond the point of obvious intoxication.

The lengths to which some of these businesses go to break the rules and make a sale is just infuriating. I've even investigated establishments which literally served someone until the alcohol killed them. Making sure those businesses are held accountable should be just as important getting victims and families the help they need. Dram shop just so happens to be an avenue through which one can achieve both results.

Is that something authorities are looking into here? There may be other possible factors that led to this crash, but any scenarios is going to require close attention from experienced professionals. The sooner those steps are taken, the sooner the victims and families get the help they deserve.
