Commentary on Chase Deric, Jonathan Montenegro Wrong-Way Accident in Houston

I want to emphasize up front that I can't speak to what exactly happened here. Whatever the common factors are, there need to be proper investigations before anyone starts drawing conclusions. I say this primarily because, quite frankly, the vast majority of wrong-way collisions involve drunk drivers. Folks in Houston are probably no stranger to this, though it's important they understand what can come next for the victims and families.

Among other things, one avenue is the possibility of dram shop law if a local alcohol provider over-served someone to the point they couldn't tell they were on the wrong side of the freeway. That establishment could be liable for contributing to a serious collision. But as likely as that is, it's just as important to ensure investigators look into other possible factors, even if they seem unlikely.

Were there mechanical issues? A medical condition? Is signage in the area missing, damaged, or insufficient? Was this just a simple mistake? Jumping to conclusions isn't going to get people the help they need. That's why it's so important to make sure nothing slips through the cracks s steps are taken to find out what exactly happened here.
