Commentary on Donald Neil Chick Single-Vehicle Accident in Abilene
UPDATE (July 15 2022): In a recent report, authorities included a .168 BAC test result. Again, I can only speculate given these initial reports which require more thorough investigations to confirm. But if the tests are accurate, then I'd like to emphasize the possibilities I highlighted in the original commentary below. At the end of the day, someone lost their life here. Whatever mistakes they did or didn't make, their loved ones still have rights, and there may still be parties complicit in this tragedy yet to face the appropriate consequences. Have authorities continued looking into this event to see if some local business had a hand in this man's tragic death?
ORIGINAL: It's important people understand that authorities don't always bring up alcohol to say that it was a suspected factor. It's usually just standard procedure, so alcohol may have nothing to do with this wreck. It is important to consider, of course, especially if a local business illegally over-served the driver, as that business could be liable under dram shop law. But as important as that is to consider, are authorities being equally prudent looking into less common factors? As unlikely as things like mechanical issues, defective parts, road hazards, medical emergencies, and even reckless drivers that left the scene are, they all warrant thorough investigations. Otherwise, something crucial could slip through the cracks. Whether or not this incident is getting the attention it deserves remains to be seen.
