Angelina Coward, Nanette Harris Killed, Kim Powell Injured in Smith County, TX Car Accident

Smith County, TX -- May 6, 2022, Angelina Coward and Nanette Harris were killed and Kim Powell was injured in a crash on State Highway 31 in Smith County.

Authorities say the incident happened shortly before 8:45 p.m. on Texas 31, roughly 12 miles east of Tyler. Preliminary investigation suggests Coward, 55, was driving a van west on the highway when she pulled onto the shoulder to make a U-turn. Reports indicate the van turned into the path of Powell's westbound car and the two collided in the roadway.

Coward and her passenger Harris, 79, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Powell, 64, was transported to a Tyler hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Commentary on Angelina Coward, Nanette Harris, Kim Powell Accident in Smith County

People may be too quick to write this crash off after reading the details in preliminary reports. On its surface it seems to be tragic but fairly straightforward. However, experience has taught me it's important to look into other possible factors as well to ensure the whole story is learned.

It would be a mistake to just presume the U-turning driver made a mistake of judgment or timing. That could be what investigators ultimately prove with evidence, but there are still other aspects of the wreck that must be considered to understand the whole picture. What about lighting and visibility in that area? Were both vehicles in good repair? How fast was the car traveling on the roadway? Did the van's driver use her turn signal before starting the U-turn? If so, was the other driver paying enough attention to see it? Is anything wrong with that stretch of road that makes it dangerous?

I'm not trying to overcomplicate things or point fingers here. I'm only saying what I so often do: When someone is hurt or killed in an accident it's important not to jump to any conclusions, but instead to investigate carefully and learn all the available facts. If police just chalk everything up to an unfortunate U-turn and look no further, the victims' loved ones may not get the whole story they deserve. The best way to fill in those concerning blanks is to work with independent investigators to seek more answers.
