Commentary on Dump Truck Accident on State Route 46 in Terre Haute
The initial reports certainly seem to suggest that the Jeep making the turn may have done so prematurely. However, something stands out to me that others may not catch. The reports I've seen about this incident basically recount the events all through the lens of what the dump truck driver told police. Are we really getting the full story, or just one side of it?
I know people may be quick to write this off as some attack on truckers, but consider things from the perspective of a family member of someone hurt in a serious crash. The only details you're hearing are from one driver. Naturally, people are more likely to paint themselves in the best light possible, intentionally or not. That means in the best case, they can leave out important information. In the worst case, they can outright lie to save their butts.
It shouldn't be controversial to say that investigators need to know the entire story, not just one side of it. That comes not through statements from the drivers or even witnesses alone. That comes from statements, debris analysis, video footage, ECM data, tire markings, maintenance history, cell phone records, and countless other factors that help to paint a full picture of the events. It remains to be seen if those steps are being taken here.
