Eneida Mercado and Children Injured in Truck Accident on 24th Ave in Edinburg, TX

Edinburg, TX -- March 29, 2022, 45-year-old Eneida Mercado and three children were hurt in a crash with a commercial truck on 24th Avenue in Hidalgo County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 4:20 p.m. on North 24th (I-69C) at University Drive. Preliminary investigation suggests Mercado's Chevrolet Impala was stopped in the inside left-turn lane of 24th, facing south at the University intersection. Behind the Chevy a Kenworth semi-truck with a dump trailer was also stopped.

When the the light turned green Mercado started to pull forward. The truck also moved forward but the driver didn't control its speed and rear-ended the Chevy. The impact pushed the car further into the intersection and the truck continued turning at first, causing its right side to hit the Impala again. When questioned, the driver said he didn't see the car before hitting it and believed the collision noises were from a vehicle malfunction. He told police he only noticed the car after exiting the truck to check the source of the noise.

Mercado and three children in the Chevy ages 12, 15, and 9 reportedly suffered non-incapacitating injuries in the crash. The truck driver was unhurt.

No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Eneida Mercado Accident on 24th Ave in Hidalgo County

I'm sure this accident was scary to go through, but at least there's some silver lining in that reports say the victims' injuries weren't too serious. However, I've been in this business long enough to view that kind of assessment with some caution after a truck crash. Obviously I hope the injuries are as minor as reports claim, but at the same time it's usually best to take them seriously--and to take all the appropriate steps in case there are unfortunate surprises ahead. Injuries thought to be minor don't always turn out to be, particularly for children.

Put simply, injuries affect kids differently. An injury that may be shrugged off or quickly overcome by an adult may cause more lasting problems for youths because they're still growing and changing. If an injury goes undetected or improperly treated for too long, a young body may heal incorrectly as it grows and create bigger issues down the line. For instance, broken bones have the potential to knit incorrectly if they're not caught or re-set in time, which can cause serious problems further down the line. That sort of long-term damage is hard to predict and can prove difficult for a family when they find themselves unprepared for the consequences of the old injuries.

That's why I say no matter how minor injuries appear, it's important that victims and families take the necessary steps to prepare themselves for any possible outcome. I truly hope these reports are accurate and everyone involved only received negligible damages they can bounce back from with relative ease. Whether or not that's the case, they should still investigate carefully and gather evidence in case they need to take action down the line.
