Commentary on Truck Accident at Avalon and Albertoni in Carson

Looking at the intersection where this crash reportedly happened it looks like it's controlled by traffic lights. That means it's possible one party or the other disregarded a red light while entering the intersection, but given how few details are really available here it's best not to jump to any such conclusion. There's still the matter of figuring out where both people came from, how fast they were traveling and which direction, if either of them turned in front of the other, who had the right-of-way, if both vehicles were in good condition, and dozens of other details--some obvious, others subtle but still significant.

People sometimes roll their eyes when I call for comprehensive investigations after accidents. They assume the police will do a proper job and by the end the truth will be found. I agree that law enforcement does important (and often thankless) work, but decades of experience with accident cases has taught me they stick pretty closely to a "playbook" during their investigations and because of that important details slip through the cracks. The narratives told in police reports are too often incomplete or mistaken, all because investigators at the scene didn't think to check all the available sources of data.

To be sure the whole story is known it would likely be best to carefully examine any evidence that can be located. That might mean going over the footage from the truck's dashcam, the officer's body camera if it was on, traffic-cam footage, or security footage from nearby businesses. If needed it could also mean searching out eyewitnesses, checking electronic data from both vehicles to learn their speeds and if they braked, looking at both parties' cell phone records to see if they were using them just before the wreck, examining the vehicles' maintenance histories for signs of potential brake failure or mechanical issues, and looking into a dozen other potential sources of evidence. Knowing the objective facts about what happened means closing a lot of loopholes and reducing the chance for misunderstandings, which can be crucial when holding the right parties responsible for the damage done.
