Commentary on School Bus, Truck Accident on Highway 8 in Carroll County

Generally speaking, the law holds commercial drivers to a pretty high standard, given that they have unique training and due to the damage their vehicles are capable of. Among those professionals, bus drivers are held to just about the highest standard. Considering their cargo is people (in this case kids), they need to be extraordinarily cautious. The fact a bus driver could apparently fail to yield to a dump truck is just beyond what we expect from a reasonably safe driver.

So what went wrong here? Was the driver on their phone? Are they qualified to drive the bus? Did they have something in their background their employer should have caught? Or, were there extenuating circumstances reports didn't mention? Obstructions to visibility? Actions from the truck making it hard to avoid? Issues with the road or the intersection? At the end of the day, whether or not the injuries here were actually minor, the crash described here is incredibly serious. There should be extensive steps to ensure all the facts are clear.
