Commentary on Olegario Deleon Jr. 18-wheeler Accident in Carrizo Springs

The way authorities describe this incident, it would appear the tractor-trailer driver attempted to make a wide right turn from the inside lane of the highway. While it's possible there are extenuating circumstances here the truck driver couldn't control, it's more likely that the driver was simply being impatient and inattentive. One should reasonably be able to expect a truck driver to check their mirrors before going over into a lane, which is why a crash like this raises serious questions about what this truck driver was doing.

Were they distracted by something? Do they not have proper training or enough experience? Is there something about their employer that encourages reckless behavior? Is there something about this specific stretch of road that makes things unreasonably dangerous for typical motorists and truck drivers alike? These reports are far from telling the whole story, which is why a more thorough independent investigation would likely be prudent.
