Kelly Williams, Robert Kramer Killed in Car Accident on US-385 in Hartley County, TX

Hartley County, TX -- April 17, 2022, 29-year-old Kelly Williams and 67-year-old Robert Kramer were killed in a crossover accident on U.S. Highway 385 in Hartley County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. on US-385 near mile marker 48, roughly two miles south of Hartley. Preliminary investigation suggests Williams was driving a Mazda CX-5 north on the highway as Kramer was southbound nearby in a Toyota Highlander.

Reports indicate Williams crossed over into the southbound lane to pass some other northbound vehicles. While in the oncoming lane the Mazda crashed head-on with the Toyota. Both vehicles then ran off opposite sides of the road and came to rest in bar ditches.

Kramer was pronounced dead at the scene. Williams was transported to an area hospital where she later died. Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Kelly Williams, Robert Kramer Accident on US-385 in Hartley County

It seems from reports like this crash may boil down to an ill-timed traffic maneuver. Maybe investigators have their story straight already and there really isn't much more to say, but like any crash it's important this be carefully examined and all its possible factors identified. It's one thing to say a driver just made a mistake, but it's another to eliminate all the other explanations.

The aftermath of a crash caused by an operator error could look a lot like one caused by a vehicle malfunction or a sudden medical issue at the wheel, but the law would treat those situations very differently. Moreover, in some circumstances--not all, but some--there's even a third party that should be held accountable for its role in what happened. If a manufacturing defect in the vehicle caused it to swerve left of center, for example, the company that made the defective part might need to answer for the part it played. Another example would be if alcohol was a factor; if a local bar or other alcohol vendor contributed to the crash with over-service it may then be liable for the damage done under dram shop law.

I'm not claiming to know more specifics than were in the news, nor am I making any accusations or assumptions about the crash. I only mean that it's important to realize things aren't necessarily as simple as preliminary reports make them sound. To be sure the whole truth of those accident is known it's important to account for all the possible explanations, even if just to rule them out. At the very least both victims' loved ones deserve to know that every possibility was accounted for in pursuit of the whole truth. Will that kind of care be taken here?
