Commentary on James Owen, Hannah Spears Semi-Truck Accident in Thayer

It's important that folks understand the standard to which reports need to be held when it comes to drawing concrete conclusions. Some folks may think they know what happened here based on these reports. Maybe they do, but it's highly unlikely they have the evidence to back it up.

These reports don't even specify if the vehicles were traveling the same direction. They don't say if the truck had working blinkers or brake lights. They don't mention the conditions of the road, the speeds of the vehicles, possible cell phone usage, weather, if investigators looked for tire or mechanical defects, fatigue, alcohol, or medical conditions, etc. Even if a lot of these things will just be ruled out, ruling them out is a crucial step in any serious truck wreck investigation.

Maybe the authorities know more than what's in these reports, but I know from experience that no one can truly say they know what happened here solely based on these preliminary reports. Getting folks the help they deserve requires a lot more effort than that, and I can only hope steps are being taken to ensure the crash is being handled by experienced professionals who understand this.
