Commentary on Lakisha Reed, Tiffany Mayson, Rakesh Davis Tow Truck Accident in Peabody

If it's true someone crossed the center line here, finding out who that was, and especially why, will obviously be important. But how to get that information can present some unique challenges. Folks are often prudent enough to wait for more information before jumping to conclusions, but waiting on the police alone isn't quite as prudent as it may seem.

I'll give an example from a case a family came to me with not long ago. According to the reports, a car crossed the center line and hit an 18-wheeler. The family wanted us to make sure nothing slipped through the cracks, and a thorough investigation showed that something pretty big went unnoticed.

Evidence showed that the 18-wheeler actually crossed the center line initially, so the victim swerved left to avoid it. The truck then veered back into its original lane where the vehicles collided. Apparently, the investigating officer wasn't very experienced, overlooked this evidence, and simply assumed the facts based on where the vehicles ended up.

To be clear, I'm not saying anything like that happened here. My point is that authorities don't always have the time, tools, or training to investigate serious commercial truck wrecks. For victims and families in need of both help and answers, this obviously can create problems. That's one of the reasons I do my best to emphasize just how important independent investigations are in these situations. They could simply confirm that police are getting all the facts, but if there is something going unnoticed, it's important that steps are taken to bring that information to light as soon as possible.
